When to Use ASA Instead of PLA or PETG

ASA resists UV, heat and weather. If your part lives outdoors or near heat sources, ASA outperforms PLA and PETG.

ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the material of choice for outdoor parts, high-temperature environments, and UV-exposed applications. It resists weathering that would degrade PLA within months and warp PETG in direct sunlight.

When to Choose ASA

  • Outdoor enclosures, mounts, and fixtures
  • Automotive interior parts (dashboard, console)
  • Parts near heat sources (electronics enclosures, light fixtures)
  • Garden and agricultural tools
  • Signage and outdoor displays

Printing ASA

ASA requires higher temperatures than PLA:

  • Nozzle: 240-260°C
  • Bed: 90-110°C
  • Enclosure recommended (prevents warping and cracking)

ASA emits styrene vapors during printing — print in a well-ventilated area or use an enclosed printer with carbon filtration.

Storage

ASA absorbs less moisture than PETG but should still be stored in sealed bags with desiccant. Dry at 70-80°C for 4-6 hours if needed.
