An outdoor sensor program needs enclosures that survive seasons of direct sun and temperature swings. PLA cracks after one season outdoors, and while standard PETG prints easily, prolonged UV exposure gradually chalks and fades its surface.
Material Strategy
For parts that live in sunlight, ASA is the structural choice — it holds strength and color under UV where PETG slowly degrades, and its heat deflection up to 95°C covers dark-surface peak temperatures. For gasket-friendly, indoor-mount variants of the same program, PETG offers easier printing and strong moisture resistance — the two grades share the same design language so the program can mix them without tooling changes. Both grades ship laser-measured to ±0.03mm so sealing surfaces stay predictable across batches.
Implementation Steps
- Split the BOM by exposure. Anything mounted in direct sun runs ASA; sheltered variants can run PETG — same design file, material chosen per mounting position.
- Validate the outdoor spec first. Print temperature towers and a UV exposure coupon before committing — ASA needs a higher print temperature and an enclosure-free setup with good ventilation.
- Design for drainage and expansion. Outdoor enclosures need drip edges and mounting bosses with thermal-expansion clearance — both grades print dimensionally stable enough at ±0.03mm tolerance.
- Plan the production window. Bulk quantities move by sea freight in vacuum-sealed, desiccant-packed cartons validated through 35-day transits — schedule the validation batch to arrive before the deployment season.
- Document per unit. Batch-coded cartons and lot-level CoA keep the installed fleet traceable if any enclosure needs a warranty review.
