How to Validate 3D Printing Filament Samples — A Structured Protocol

Don't trust the supplier. Trust your own measurements. Here's the 5-step protocol.

This protocol is supplier-neutral — apply it to any sample you evaluate, including ours. Individual results depend on your printer, environment and application.

Tool: Micrometer

Pass: Within the spool spec (e.g. ±0.03mm)

Fail signal: Single-spool deviation greater than 0.02mm from the label

Tool: Print a standard test model (3DBenchy or your own calibration model)

Pass: Clean layer adhesion, no stringing, even surface

Fail signal: Visible layer splitting, stringing over 0.5mm, warping

Tool: Print the same model from two spools of different batches

Pass: No visible difference under natural light (ΔE < 2.0)

Fail signal: Visible color difference between batches

Tool: Continuous print, 4 hours or more

Pass: No jams, no breaks, even extrusion throughout

Fail signal: Mid-print filament break or uneven feed

Tool: CoA vs your own measurements

Pass: Diameter, weight and batch number all match

Fail signal: CoA data deviating more than 5% from your measurements
